SFDC Integration App: Check Email Address Changes

I have a question about "Check Email Address Changes" feature which is available in SFDC Integration App.

In a scenario, where a) "Check Email Address Changes" feature is enabled b) all our Imports are using "email address 1 " field as a unique identifier how the "Check Email Address Changes" feature is going to be impacted when eg we decide to change the unique identifier to "email address 2" or SFDC Contact ID? Will it still use the "email address 1 " field for tracking the change of data in (e.g when sb changes his/her email address from yahoo to gmail? )
