Case Management: How to generate a pdf letters

Summary:

Is it possible to generate letters, for example a disciplinary warning letter from within a case, that can be emailed as attachment?

How can this be achieved? Can SmartText be converted to pdf or do we have to build custom BI reports and somehow link them to the case page?
