Is it possible for an xsl report template to generate an excel output in extract?

Hi - I'm new to extract and I am using xsl report template that needed to have an excel output in extract or even csv? Is that possible? I have tried using csv but it was completed with warnings and did not generate the csv output. I have tried excel but its error upon validation.
