Within a ledger, can a credit created in BU1 be applied to a transaction in BU2?

We have a business scenario where credits created in one business unit needs to be able to be applied to transactions created in a different business unit. In our case these business units share the same ledger.

Can this be done and if yes - what are the necessary setup steps.
