How succession plan works for successors into the plan?

Hi All,
We have set up succession plans for Position, Job, and Incumbent types, assigning candidates as Interim Successors to each. What is the procedure for replacing these Interim Successors if an employee in the relevant position or job is terminated? Should the successor has to be replaced manually by the HR in Person management or How it works?
