Salary basis of type salary amount determined by rates

I am using the salary basis based on 'Rates' .While creating the rate definition, there are different rate contributor type available such as overall salary, balance, rate definition and base rate. I would like to understand that which all are mandatory while creating salary basis. I read that overall salary is mandatory. What is the use of balance and base rate and is it mandatory?
