Update Subscription Number during renewal

We have a requirement to update Subscription Number during renewal number to only retain first half of subscription number

E.g. - Subscription#US4738_R17SEP23030025 after renewal becomes US4738_R17SEP23030025-1

but instead customer wants to just maintain first part and have renewed subscription number as US4738-1, US4738-2 and so on upon renewal.

Is there a way to achieve this?
