If populated, is the Renewal Duration and Period used regardless if the Use renewal term is checked?

If populated, is the Renewal Duration and Renewal Period fields at the Subscription header's Renewal Control, or at the Subscription product's Summary used for renewals regardless if the Renewal Rules Template's 'Use renewal term for automatic renewal' is checked?  In testing, and populating the Renewal Duration and Renewal Period for some of the subscription product number's Summary, and having the Use Renewal Term for Automatic Renewal unchecked, the subscription will still renew per the Renewal Duration and Renewal Period populated.  So confirming if the Use Renewal Term needs to be checked?
