Is it possible to create a customer owned asset based on a PTO Model

Summary:

We have a situation where we need to ship a PTO Item to a customer. However, we need a customer owned asset to be created based on the PTO Model not the individual items shipped to customer. Is there a way to do this? Since the PTO Model is never stocked, how would we provide a serial number to it? Can that be manually assigned once the asset is created versus at the time of shipment.
