Constraint based supplyPlan-How to prioritize alternate BOM/routing when you have multiple alternate

Summary:

When a make item has multiple BOMs/routings - 1 primary and multiple alternates (Item structures/work definitions in Fusion language) - Alt01, Alt02, Alt03. How does supply planning sequence them in Constraint based planning. I know that the default is Primary and it tries to use primary before anything else. So, the question is only about alternates - if there are multiple alternates, how are they sequenced.

I have tried to use "PREFERENCE" column in the template (which is supposed to be the priority), but it does not seem to work as expected. It seems to use sort by the name instead of priority (Yes, enough material/resources are available for all 3 alternates) . So, the questions is - Am I on the correct path ? OR is there something different I should be doing to achieve this.
