How to work with positions in compensation plans

We need help configuring the promotion compensation plan for a client who is facing the following situation:
Currently, the client handles promotions via Core HR. They do not change the employee's Position; instead, they directly update the Position by changing the Job Code assigned to it. Consequently, the job update happens through Position Synchronization, and the salary update is processed by the promotion action in the compensation plan.
The client would like to maintain this method of updating the employee's Job Code using the promotion plan data coming from the Compensation module.
