Changing the currency of the primary ledger

Summary:

Due to LATAM local govt. requirements, we need to change the currency of the primary ledger.
What I understand from few Oracle docs is we cannot change the currency once the ledger is setup. Couple of questions..
1. Can we create new ledger and associate the existing BU to new ledger?
2. What all needs to be considered or impacts for making this change?

Any other suggestions, can you please help.
