Update an element without affecting the open compensation worksheet since it's for the new cycle

Summary:

I'm trying to add an additional input value per our business requirement. The Element I need to tie it to has been live and active for 2 years now. Is there a way to add the input value without ending the Element and creating a new one?

Can I also do this without affecting our compesnation worksheet that is currently open? We need the new elements to work for the new compensation worksheet/cycle.
