Extending Accounting Segment Length in Oracle Financials

We have a couple of future accounting segments we created a while ago as spare segments and now we would like to start using them.

Original future use segments length has been set to 6 alphanumeric chars and we would like to understand if we can safely extend length to 10 chars.

In addition we would like to rename segments, to improve meaning when displaying them in forms and reports. For example we have a segment named "Future Use 1" that we would like to rename to "Project ID".

Can you please share if, as a customer or as implementation team, you already faced this scenario and how did you managed the change? Are there any risks to existing data and functionalities (we have never used "Future Use" segments and these are currently always defaulted to 0).
