One Line Per Candidate For Events?

Hi all,

I've been trying to create a report of hires, but would like to add a column that displays particular event data, but only if that event happened, and to otherwise leave it blank.  Ideally it would only have one row per candidate.  For example:

CANDIDATE NAME     STEP     CSW DATE     EVENT

Jack Doe                    Hire          12/1/2010         

Jill Doe                       Hire          12/2/2010     Candidate Shared

John Doe                   Hire          12/1/2010    

Every time I put in the event in my query my results have multiple lines per candidate and when I try to filter, my results only contain candidates with that event rather than those with and those without.  Has anyone managed to accomplish this?
