Preferred name dynamic audit on job application

We currently have preferred name available on our job application but we are finding a lot of cases where the first name and preferred name is the same and we are having to audit. Is there a way for the system to identify if the data is the same in both fields and error? Or is there a way to have more control over this field on the job application? Make it dynamic?
