Tracking Working Employees

Does anyone have a good process for tracking Working Employees as they  apply for internal positions? We use a Main Status of Working Employee,  but as soon as they apply for an internal req, their Main Status changes  to Under Consideration. Then, when they are eventually rejected, they  go back to Talent Pool, when they should return to Working Employee.  We've then lost our identifier of them being a working employee.

To get around this, I've been playing with a custom field Internal  Applicant that I put on our internal careers site. Its a picklist set to  Yes (cannot be changed), which identifies employees as Internal to  recruiters. However, when these employees quite and re-apply as an  external employee on our external careers site, the Internal field  remains as Yes. I tried to code a Hidden form field using HTML on the  career sites, but it would not work. If I could get that functioning, I  could set the field to Yes on the internal site, and No on the
