Reference Variable in text column of a report

So, creating some reference variables in excel variable sheet that do not exist in EPM. Can I reference these in text rows / columns using text formula in a report which is a reference doclet in a report package where the afore mentioned reference variables have been created?

So I create various reference variables in an excel sheet, some of which are values which are wholly external to EPM - i.e. I cannot source them from an EPM based cubes etc. This largely smart view excel sheet is uploaded into my report package also as an reference doclet - excel - and used to populate the values of reference variables that I have created in the report package.
