Automatically update report package next year

When we create a report package for a year. What is the best approach to keep it dynamic so that it will work for next year too. The report package has management reports which use substitution variables and also uses static and reference variables.

If we update the variables, it updates the report package, but how do we also keep the old version if the users want to see those in future.
