ASO Outline Compaction Effects MaxL ESSCMDQ and EPMAutomate

I can't find this documented anywhere officially, but I do remember various presentations and articles being written about how in Essbase proper, the MAXL compact outline command doesn't really do much, and the only way to remove entries from the ASO cube that were deleted was using the ESSCMDQ utility which called a different method and actually removed the deleted members. In EPBCS, is the EPMAutomate command to compact the outline, or the API or Job or whatever method you prefer, invoking the MaxL method or the ESSCMDQ method?
