How to add context variable in ServiceRequest lay

Summary:

I need to update a variable defined at AppUI (service) level with the user input which was received at field Template from withing ServiceRequest layout.

Firing event from layout actionChain, or creating a Context variable at ServiceRequest layout level with two-way-update seems to be prohibited. What are the available options?
