Duplicate Check : Email address getting updated for ex employees after merge

Summary:

In one of the test case, after merging ex-employee and external profile, ex-employee email address is getting updated to the other email id tagged to the external candidate. However, based on the documentation it should have retained the ex-employee email address and it has been same for other test cases. What could be possible reason for the same as we see inconsistent behavior sometimes?
