Reporting a value in a selection list

Problem: we have a candidate UDF setup as a selection list which is populated with data via integration once a canddiate is hired and flipped over to an employee profile.
I need to run a report that pulls the selection that was populated, but when I use that Candidate UDF field in my report, I the output is the entire selection list rather than the actual value. Any thoughts on how to correct this?
