Integration Broker for external system

Has anyone implemented Integration Broker or some other peopletools with an external system with the purpose of passing information like the AR customer balance? There is an initiative in our company for the home grown system written in java (external system) to create a web service to obtain the AR customer balance from Peoplesoft AR. We would like to know if someone in this community has had a similar experience integration broker to external system, we suggested to have a PS view containing the AR customer balance exposed  to the external system but are looking for a more REAL TIME approach and specially the use of
