Custom Metrics returning non-numeric values

Hi,
Is it possible to custom metrics which return a non-numeric value? If yes, then it can be done with SELECT statement or a FUNCTION needs to be written for it? How do we make the metrics visible in the front-end once we have added it in the setup? Does it reflect automatically or a concurrent program needs to be run? If yes, what is the name of the program?
