Fields updated by worksheet versus Express Deposit

 I'm having trouble getting deposits to post for items carried over from version 8.8 to our 9.0 environment.using Express Deposit.  The usually create a worksheet.  If I then save the express deposit, go back in, delete the worksheet, and save.  Then go back into express deposit and select Batch Standard, it will post.  My question is:  What setting is being changed by the worksheet that is not affected by the Express Deposit option?  I'm normally not even opening the worksheet.  I did this with about a dozen express deposits and it worked.
If it helps any, I had to change the chart field inheritance in 9.0 to get an deposits to post.  So, those settings are different in 8.8 and 9.0.  Not sure what impact this has on the item and pending_item records.
