Is it possible to display message attribute containing HTML tags as formatted HTML in notification?

I have a message attribute of type text that holds an HTML formatted table of results that is built at run-time since the number and content of the rows changes with each run.  However, when the notification is generated (preference is set to HTML mail), it is displaying the HTML tags rather than interpreting them.  Is there any way to get the notification to use the tags rather than display them?  No errors are generated...
