Migrating Sun+LDAP to Oracle SSO

I'm in the middle of migrating a Sun web server (apache2) using Sun LDAP for authentication to Oracle SSO.  There are difficulties being experienced in this migration, the least of which information and experience in this area.  I have a kindly volunteered cookbook, but I still have some questions about this process.  Does anyone here have any experience and/or guidance in this area?
For a very simple example, I've been struggling trying to get response files to work.  They don't seem to work as advertised, e.g.,

  ./runInstaller -response $rsp/webtier-install

Ignores the file and still requires GUI screen input.
