How to Manage Shared Cache as Part of a PeopleTools Patch

I have a general question concerning shared cache, and how to best manage the shared cache while applying a PeopleTools patch.  PeopleTools directions indicate this:

"9.3. Purge all App Server and Web Server cache. (Knowledge Management document <Document: 753215.1> has more details on purging if needed.)"

When using either file or database shared cache, what should happen? Should the old cache be deleted or should the shared cache be updated?  

We are using shared file cache and are in the practice of regenerating new cache as part of a Tools patch, but I am curious if it can only be updated and then redistributed (to save time).
