use Excel output in stead of PDF to mail to the customer

We have a strategy work item called 'Mail Statement of Account'. This is an automatic work item that sends an email to the customer showing the statement of account. We would like this statement of account to be sent to the customer as an excel attachment. We are on 11.5.10.
In order to achieve this, we have created a new publishing template. For this template, we have set the default output type to Excel.
We have also created a corresponding template query that makes use of this new template.
Lastly, we crated the work item template, included it into a strategy and assigned that to a customer.
