How to get user defined parameters to work in an embedded pagelet

We are exploring the pagelet functionality in 9.1 and have created some pagelets that we added to a custom page instead of the homepage. Reason for this is that this pagelet can be used by all employees and we do not want the query executed everytime someone logs on to the system.

The Custom page is an empty page that does not do any transaction , just dipslays the user ID and name of the user logged in and then an HTML area that is used to display the pagelet. The code to display this pagelet comes from PeopleBooks (below) and works just fine untill I try to use the override parameters. To be able to save the code I had to add the parameter field to the page as a field to get it into the component buffer, but I still cannot see an option to change the parameter, like with
