T5440 10gbe xaui nxge vlan tag bandwidth throttle issue

We have 2 T5440 directly connected to each other over the 10gbe xaui nic nxge4.  We can plumb both nxge4's with a basic setup of ip/netmask/broadcast/mtu 9000, run iperf and see bandwidth at 9.88 gb/sec.  As soon an we unplumb then plumb them up using a vlan tag, nxge1026004, iperf shows 2.88 gb/sec.  I no there are not a lot of setups that would require a vlan tag for directly connected servers but we are doing this to troubleshoot an issue when connected to a switch as the issue arises there too..
N01: with out vlan tag:
nxge4: flags=1001000843<UP,BROADCAST,

Howdy, Stranger!
