Unpost Groups - what is created as a result

Looking for some documentation regarding what happens when you unpost  Group types in AR. 
When we unpost a Maintenance Group - a new group is created that reflects the opposite activity so it can be unposted. 
Does a second Maintenance group get created to be reworked/deleted? 
We're on V9.1, currently testing through bundle # 18.  Has this functionality changed since Ver 8.9?
