Combo Edit - Journal Spreadsheet and/or Remote Call Capabilities

We are looking to implement a remote call to the combo edit routine from either the delivered journal spreadsheet upload template (JRNL1.xls) or from a custom Excel template.  Any experience out there or recommendations regarding approach and effort required?
