system proxy

I installed Solaris 11 x/86 and when I attempt to check for updates using Update Manager, I can't get past the the proxy. I configured the Network Proxy thru the Preferences menu, but it does not make any difference.  The same proxy settings in Firefox browser works just fine.
This is using the gnome desktop.

Any suggestions?
