SQL error when running query

I'd appreciate a resolution to the following issue:

We've got prompt based queries that staff can run. Every now and then when trying to run a query (after inputting the prompt parameters) the following error pops up:

"A SQL error occurred. Please consult your system log for details."

It has nothing to do with the SQL code on the query. You can click on the OK in the same window and it may or may not pop up again, but the query will eventually run. This error does not pop up all the time, just every once in a while.
