Unable to Deliever Workflow e-mails to External E-mail Address

We received following message after changing the user's e-mail address to an personal account instead of the her e-mail with our organization.

The notification with the ID of 2764041 experienced problems when attempting to dispatch an email notification to the role USERNAME. Subsequently the notification preference for the following users has been set to DISABLED. Please correct the issue and re-enable their notification preference.

Does anyone know why an internal e-mail will work, but not external e-mail address?
