Collections Status in Collections Workbench

Can you please let me know how the collections status is determined in the Collections Workbench? The user guide mentions the below:

Indicates the most critical delinquency status.My understanding is each transaction is determined as either Current, Delinquent or Pre-Delinquent. How is the most critical delinquency status derived? Is it the status of the last transaction created for the customer account?
