Are There Performance Differences Between CI-Based and Message-Based Web Services?

We are going to be creating some new web services to be consumed by our new portal.  The users will initially be primarily students.  We are wondering about the performance differences between CI-based web services and Message-based web services.  Can anyone provide any information regarding performance differences between these two types of web services?
