Applying Maintenance pack during the Application upgrade

Hi All,
  I am trying to find out the Best way to apply the Maintenance pack during the application upgrade.
 I know that PeopleSoft does not reccommend to apply the Maintenace pack during the upgrade process apart from that include in the upgrade path(upgrade template).
  But does anyone have any suggestion on applying the Maintenance packs during the upgrade. As you know the application upgrade would be a lengthy process like about
an year and then you are behind the latest Maintenance packs released.

  Please let me know the Best way to keep our application with the latest Maintenance pack during the application upgrade process.
