Application Server filling with Directories

Our Application Servers are reaching the limit of number of directories that can be opened.  The cause is the self service W2.  It appears to create a directory each time it is opened.  Are these directories needed after the employee leaves the self service page?  Can we delete these directories on a regular basis?
