PeopleTools Upgrade to 8.53 without patching FSCM 9.0 application to latest. doable?

Can someone confirm or deny my concern.  If we try to upgrade PeopleTools from 8.49 to 8.53, but don't want to apply any application patches (note: we are on PS Financials 9.0 and about 40 patches behind on the application side).  Will we have problems because the application is not patched up to the latest on 9.0 or is this possible?
I would think we may have issues with things like custom workflow using the delivered workflow engine, but not sure if this is a valid concern. 

Has anyone done this or know what would happen in this scenario?
