Data Conversion - How does it work? - Upgrade HR8.8/PT8.48 to HR9.1/PT8.51

Hi all,
 I would love to hear from your experiences or your thoughts on the Data Conversion in regards to an upgrade.

I understand that the Data Conversion program is designed to handle PeopleSoft standard.
I am trying to understand how to incorporate our customizations and developments into the Data Conversion program.

How do I deal with custom fields in standard tables? Are they taken into account automatically? Or do we have to adapt the Data Conversion program for that?
Similar question for custom tables. Are they taken into account by the Data Conversion (Analyzer) ?

We expect actually that we have to adapt the Data Conversion program. But we have no idea how this looks like? Some input would be great.
