Upgrade of Database from 10g to 11g during PT 8.49 to 8.53 Upgrade

i am seeking input on database upgrade procedures in relation to a 8.53 tools upgrade
We are currently running FSCM 9.0/PT 8.49 and Oracle 10g Database

It was brought to our attention that an Oracle 10g database bug is preventing us from using the export process on our 1.5 Terabyte database

Long story short the DBAs are planning to load a new 11g database on a new server with certified Linux Red Hat 6 OS.

My question follows: 

From reading the 8.53 Upgrade Guide, It seems to state that we are expected to start with our existing tools (e.g. PT 8.49 running on a Oracle 10g) and use Change Assistant
