Field on a page question

On the Campus Solutions page: CSH_OFF_CC_PMT_SEC, there is the Card Number field.     When looking at this field which is SSF_CR_CARD_NBR_CS on the SF_CR_CARD_WK record, it has a length of 24 characters.    I have a work request to make it so that it is limited to only allowing the individual entering data in this field a limit of 4.    I am also supposed to use the existing field.    Has anyone ever accomplished this before?    Anyone got any pointers or examples.
