Naming Conventions and Recommendatiions in the Install Guide

I was recently  watching the PeopleTools 8.53 Upgrade Webcast.IVe got some questions which I do post  here :

 I refer to  slide 12  with the headline “No Source, just Target:”

So far as I understood, the red box represents some temporary installation directory, where the virtual cd’s are saved and the cd’s gonna be unpacked and extracted, and finally where all these setup.exe’s (Windows OS flavor) gonna be executed to perform the installation.

I guess I am right until here ain’t I ?

 The installer then asks for the target directory which one said is the existing PS_HOME directory. So good so far.
