De-Coupling Existing Environment w/Upgrade

We are currently running tools 8.52.14 and HCM/FMS/ELM 9.0 Apps.

We are beginning to plan for the upgrade to 8.53 and HCM/FMS/ELM 9.2 Apps and the idea of running a de-coupled environment sounds like a good idea at the moment.

The documentation I've read says that a "clean" install of tools and the app is required.

My question is, I believe that will be fine with installing PeopleTools 8.53 as a clean install and installing the application as a clean install of the PS HOME, PS_APP_HOME, etc, what do we do about the existing database? Do we still run the upgrade scripts as listed in the upgrade document for the database?
