XML Publisher (BI Publisher): Pivot Table Using Non-Numeric Summary Fields?

Hello - has anyone figured out how to create a Pivot Table using a NON-numeric summary field? For example, max(salary grade) or any summary based on a character field? Crystal does it quite easily. I haven't yet figured out how to accomplish it in XML Publisher (.RTF template). I have a feeling manual tags will be needed but not sure what those would be. I saw the end of this forum post that I thought would work but didn't seem to when I tried it.https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=985766

The documentation I've read so far doesn't explain how to do it - no leads in BIP User's Guide and nothing in Oracle Support Knowledge Base articles from what I could find.
