Looking for reference documents that explain what happens as it relates to connections, data transfe

Are there any reference documents (red/white,other) that explain (technically/functionally) what happens as it relates to connections, data transfer, object download/upload, client cache when using app des (PT 8.49) from client for App Packages, custom projects, etc?  I am looking for general and technical documents that explain what happens as App Pack or project is opened, updated and saved. 

I am trying to determine if there should be a difference when the accessing the application from the web as compared to accessing app des over standard internet ports.
