PSEMAgent not collecting data when run as a service

I'm setting up a new machine to host the demo and development environments for HCM 9.2 and PeopleTools 8.53.  I installed the PSEMAgent as a service (using an elevated command prompt) and it appears in the Windows Services applet.  When I start the service, either manually or automatically at boot, the process "psemagentservice.exe *32" appears in the Windows Task Manager giving the impression that the agent is running; however, it does not collect any data.  That is, it will not create the search-results.xml file.  If I start the agent manually using the StartAgent.bat program, the data is collected just fine.
